With surge in cases, Sri Lanka declares Dengue prevention week

In response to a significant increase in Dengue cases, the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka has announced a special Dengue prevention week scheduled to run from January 7 to 13.  Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, said that the targeted campaign will include islandwide cleaning initiatives and Dengue prevention and awareness efforts. 

Dr. Samaraweera noted that the focus will be on 70 high-risk Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas, where breeding grounds for Dengue have been identified.

Collaborating with the tri forces, Police, health officials, and voluntary organizations, the dengue prevention campaign aims to address the root causes of disease spread, Dr. Samaraweera said, appealing to the public for their full cooperation in ensuring the success of this initiative.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 88,398 Dengue cases were reported in 2023, with the Colombo District leading with 18,650 cases. The month of December alone witnessed 11,498 cases, marking the highest monthly total for 2023. The Dengue outbreak has claimed the lives of 58 individuals last year.
