Nikki Haley questions Trump’s mental fitness amid confusion over Pelosi comments
Nikki Haley raised doubts about Donald Trump’s mental fitness for a potential presidential run on Saturday (Jan 20), following his repeated confusion between her and former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a campaign speech.
While campaigning in Keene, New Hampshire, Haley referenced Trump’s recent speech in which he erroneously claimed that she was responsible for Capitol security on January 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters breached the building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of his electoral defeat to Democrat Joe Biden.
In Trump’s speech, he initially stated that Haley had declined security assistance offered by his administration on that fateful day. He later revisited the topic, stating, “They destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it.”
The 77-year-old Trump has also accused Nancy Pelosi of rejecting security measures that he alleges were offered by his administration. However, a special House committee tasked with investigating the events of January 6 found no substantiated evidence to support this claim.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Nikki Haley remarked on Saturday, “They’re saying he got confused, that he was talking about something else, he’s talking about Nancy Pelosi.” She went on to express her concerns, stating, “He mentioned me multiple times in that scenario. The concern I have is – I’m not saying anything derogatory – but when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this,” Haley emphasized, adding, “We can’t.” The controversy surrounding Trump’s claims and Haley’s response continues to be a topic of discussion.
Trump, who won last week’s Iowa caucuses and is the current republican front-runner, has ramped up his criticism of Haley’s campaign.
