United Nations calls for amendments of the Online Safety Act

The United Nations Human Rights office has called on the government to rethink the controversial Online Safety Act, suggesting modifications to align it with human rights commitments.

In a statement on X, previously Twitter, the UN Human Rights expressed concerns, stating, “The newly enacted Online Safety Act poses significant threats to human rights, including the right to freedom of expression.”

The office further recommended, “We encourage the Government to revise the legislation, taking into account the worries of civil society and industry representatives, to ensure adherence to human rights standards.”

The Act, which has faced criticism both domestically and from the international community, was officially made law yesterday, receiving approval from Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
