The attempt by some MPs to dissolve Parliament by passing a resolution has ended up in failure according to a parliamentarian who wished to remain anonymous.

Previously, former MP and Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, discussed the possibility of scheduling the General Election before the Presidential election with President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

However,it seemed as if the President was adamant to stay with his decision. Some MPs who were loyal to Basil Rajapaksa wanted to pass a resolution in Parliament but were not able to secure the requirement of 113 voters.

The General Election is otherwise scheduled for 2025 only.
In the meantime, the Election Commission is required to issue the notice declaring the presidential election towards the end of July or early August so that polling could take place on a day between September 17 and October 18.
Legacy Daily reported a few weeks back that polling would take place during the first week of October.

Any General Election before that will only exhaust the Commission.It will also prove to be costly burdening the taxpayer with another Rs.10 billion.
The President has the power to dissolve Parliament at any given time within the legal framework but has opted not to.

Meanwhile, the political parties including the SLPP and the United National Party (UNP) led by the President are planning to have mega May Day rallies this year in a show of power ahead of vital elections pending for the year.
