Frank Duckworth, Co-Creator of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method, Dies at 84

English statistician Frank Duckworth, one of the inventors of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, passed away on June 21 at the age of 84. The DLS method, co-created with Tony Lewis, is used to determine results in rain-affected cricket matches. Introduced in international cricket in 1997, it was formally adopted by the ICC in 2001. After the retirement of Duckworth and Lewis, Australian statistician Steven Stern made modifications, and the method was renamed. Duckworth and Lewis were awarded MBEs in 2010 for their contribution. The DLS method uses complex statistical analysis, considering factors like wickets remaining and overs lost, to set revised targets for the batting team.
