EU Observers Ensure Transparent Sri Lanka Election Process Today

News Today: European Union Election Observation Mission to Monitor Elections

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has announced its commitment to maintaining an independent and transparent approach in monitoring the upcoming Presidential elections in Sri Lanka. Headed by Chief Observer Nacho Sánchez Amor, a Member of the European Parliament, the mission aims to provide an unbiased analysis of the electoral process. “We will not receive orders from any embassies or anyone else but will act in a truly independent and transparent manner,” Amor emphasized during a press briefing.

The EU EOM’s mandate includes observing and analyzing various aspects of the election, such as the work of the election administration, the legal framework, the conduct of the campaign, and the role of both traditional media and social media in the electoral process. They will also evaluate the overall environment for political and civic participation, ensuring the election is conducted in accordance with national laws and international standards that Sri Lanka has pledged to uphold.

The observers have noted a focus in local media on areas like campaign finance, security, and other potential violations. Despite these concerns, Amor expressed satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere surrounding the elections thus far. Following the election, the EU EOM will release a preliminary statement and a comprehensive final report, including recommendations for future electoral reforms, to be published and presented to Sri Lankan authorities two months after the election’s completion.

The EU’s observation team includes 26 long-term observers deployed since August 29, 2024, and 32 short-term observers who will participate on election day. Their findings will be crucial in shaping the future of electoral practices in Sri Lanka.
