President Slams NPP’s Export Plans Without FTAs in Fiery Speech
News Today: Ranil Wickremesinghe questions NPP’s export plans without FTAs
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has publicly questioned NPP Presidential Candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s plans for developing exports. During a rally, Wickremesinghe expressed confusion over the National People’s Power (NPP) leader’s intention to terminate all free trade agreements (FTAs) while also promoting exports. Wickremesinghe pointed out the contradiction in the NPP’s manifesto, stating that Sunil Handunetti had advocated for the establishment of export processing zones, yet Dissanayake’s manifesto promises to end existing trade deals.
“How can you develop exports without free trade agreements?” Wickremesinghe questioned, adding that he plans to continue raising this issue until Dissanayake provides an explanation. The President also referenced reports of Dissanayake’s illness, wishing him a speedy recovery, but inquired if he would apologize to the citizens in the North for allegedly threatening them.
Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of FTAs for economic growth and export development, urging Dissanayake to clarify his position. The topic of trade agreements has become central in the political debate as Sri Lanka grapples with economic challenges.
