MPs Purchase Shotguns Amid Growing Security Fears

News Today: 215 MPs purchase shotguns for security, News Today highlights concerns.

It was reported that 215 Parliamentarians in Sri Lanka have purchased shotguns for personal security. This move was prompted by concerns over their safety and the protection of their property, as many MPs recalled how their homes were set on fire during the nationwide protests that began in 2022. Fearing that such incidents could happen again, these MPs had requested the shotguns nearly ten months ago, and the request was recently approved by the authorities.

The Defence Ministry confirmed that the 215 MPs had already acquired their shotguns. Initially, Chinese-made pistols were issued to the parliamentarians for protection. However, due to widespread dysfunction in the pistols, a decision was made to replace them with shotguns, which are considered more reliable for personal defense.

This development has raised questions about the increasing security measures being taken by politicians, especially in a time of political unrest. The parliamentarians’ fears reflect the tension that remains in the country following the 2022 protests, and their acquisition of shotguns is seen as a step towards securing themselves in case of future unrest.
