Executive Presidency to be Abolished in Sri Lanka

News Today: Executive Presidency to be abolished in Sri Lanka

National People’s Power (NPP) member Sunil Handunnetti announced yesterday that the country is set to witness the abolition of the Executive Presidency. He emphasized that there will no longer be Presidents with executive powers, making the current President the last one in Sri Lankan history with such authority.

Handunnetti highlighted that the abolishment of the Executive Presidency is the first priority of the new Government. He called for the public’s support in making this significant political shift possible. “Today, you have elected this country’s final Executive President. We need the public’s support for that,” Handunnetti stated, stressing the importance of public participation in this process.

He further elaborated on the Government’s commitment to reducing the perks and benefits granted to politicians. The focus is on removing unnecessary privileges and ensuring that politicians do not receive anything beyond what the public needs. “There is a promise we made to the people, that politicians won’t need what people don’t need. We will keep that promise,” Handunnetti assured.

This move marks a historic turning point in Sri Lanka’s governance, as it aims to decentralize power and bring about a more accountable and transparent political structure.
