New Government to Review Adani Wind Power Deal Post-Elections

News Today: Sri Lanka’s government to reconsider Adani Group wind power deal after elections

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Vijitha Herath, announced that the new government will reconsider the wind power deal with the Adani Group following the upcoming General Elections. During a press briefing, Herath mentioned that the project, which had been previously canceled by the former regime under President Dissanayake, could be reassessed after consulting with the Cabinet of Ministers.

The Adani Group’s wind power deal was initially scrapped due to concerns over national sovereignty, as expressed by President Dissanayake. He had promised to halt the project during his election campaign. However, Minister Herath clarified that no major policy decisions on projects of this scale will be made until after November 14th, allowing the newly elected government to carefully evaluate the situation.

Gautam Adani, Asia’s second-richest individual and head of the Adani Group, has expressed his eagerness to continue developing multiple infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka. One of the major projects being pursued by Adani is the expansion of the Colombo container-ship port, which is backed by the US Development Finance Corporation.

This reevaluation of the wind power project with the Adani Group marks a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s energy sector, as the nation looks to balance foreign investment with national interests.
