News Today: Arjun Aloysius Imprisoned for Tax Evasion: Rs. 3.5B Default

Arjun Aloysius, the Director of W.M. Mendis & Company Ltd, has been sentenced to six months in prison for defaulting on VAT payments amounting to Rs. 3.5 billion. The Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe issued the verdict after Aloysius was found guilty of failing to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) dues that had accumulated over time.

The court heard that W.M. Mendis & Company Ltd had repeatedly failed to comply with the country’s tax laws, leading to the massive unpaid VAT amount. Aloysius, who has been entangled in various legal battles over the years, faced this sentence as a result of defaulting on these payments.

The Magistrate emphasized the importance of adhering to tax regulations, stating that this ruling serves as a warning to other companies and individuals who may attempt to evade their tax obligations. Aloysius will now serve a six-month term in prison for his actions, which have significantly impacted the state’s revenue.

This case adds to Aloysius’ already controversial legal history, having been involved in other high-profile financial scandals in the past. His imprisonment marks another chapter in his ongoing legal challenges, with more attention drawn to the need for stringent enforcement of tax laws in Sri Lanka.
