News Today: Elpitiya Election Results Reveal NPP Vote Base Decline
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara recently revealed a decline in the National People’s Power (NPP) voter base, citing the results of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha elections as evidence. Speaking at a media briefing, Madduma Bandara highlighted that the NPP’s voter support has dropped below 42 percent, signaling a shift in political dynamics in Sri Lanka.
He pointed out that traditionally in Sri Lankan politics, the party that wins the Presidential election generally dominates subsequent elections. However, the Elpitiya election results reflect a different trend. The NPP garnered only 17,000 votes, while other parties collectively amassed 19,000, indicating potential challenges for the NPP in future Pradeshiya Sabha elections. Madduma Bandara commented that the results suggest the NPP may struggle to secure victory even at the local council level.
This shift in voter support is significant, as it marks a possible change in the political landscape, with the SJB emerging as a stronger contender. The outcome could impact the strategies of Sri Lanka’s political parties in upcoming elections.
