News Today: Former President Calls for Security, Ignoring Personal Privileges
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for increased security for former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa, emphasizing that their privileges should not be revoked. Speaking in Dambulla yesterday, he clarified that while he does not require any personal privileges or security, he believes it is crucial to protect the safety of former leaders.
Wickremesinghe stated, “I do not need these benefits. Get rid of my privileges. But it is not appropriate to remove the security and official residences of those leaders.” He pointed out that although Kumaratunga has never supported him, they collaborated for the common cause of supporting former President Maithripala Sirisena. Wickremesinghe remarked on Rajapaksa’s declining popularity but underscored the importance of acknowledging his role in ending the war, arguing that this warrants continued protection.
At a meeting organized by former State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon, he expressed concern over recent discussions that labeled Parliament a “den of thieves” and suggested taking over the bungalows of former Presidents. Wickremesinghe insists that security should be maintained for both Kumaratunga and Rajapaksa, arguing that their contributions to the nation should not be overlooked, despite any political differences.
He concluded his remarks by reiterating the need to respect the privileges and safety of former leaders while highlighting his own willingness to forgo personal benefits.
