Sumathi Dharmawardena Appointed Chair of ICC Anti-Corruption Unit

News Today: ICC Announces New Chair of Anti-Corruption Unit Sumathi Dharmawardena

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially appointed Sumathi Dharmawardena P.C. as the new Independent Chair of its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). This announcement marks a significant leadership change, as Dharmawardena succeeds Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who retired after an impressive 14-year tenure in the role.

Bringing a wealth of legal and investigative expertise, Dharmawardena has previously served as an Additional Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka. In this capacity, he represented the Government of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Sport in various legal matters, ensuring compliance and integrity within the sports sector.

His extensive background includes working with Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, where he focused on tackling corruption in sports. Notably, Dharmawardena has played a crucial role in overseeing investigations and prosecutions under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, a significant piece of legislation he helped formulate.

As the new ACU Chair, Dharmawardena will be responsible for overseeing and leading the ICC’s anti-corruption efforts. This position is critical in maintaining the integrity of cricket globally, especially in light of recent challenges faced by the sport. The ACU operates at the executive level under the guidance of the General Manager – Integrity, ensuring that all measures are in place to combat corruption.

Dharmawardena’s appointment is a positive step forward for the ICC as it aims to uphold the principles of fairness and transparency in cricket, reinforcing its commitment to clean sport.
