News Today: Government Warns Rice Owners of Legal Action to Control Rice Prices
The Sri Lankan Government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has pledged to enforce strict legal action against rice millers who fail to comply with price controls. In discussions held today, officials addressed the challenges in regulating rice prices amid insufficient paddy stock, a situation stemming from the previous administration’s lack of paddy purchases.
At a rally in Moneragala, the President emphasized two potential measures: releasing paddy stocks or imposing legal sanctions. Since the government’s current paddy reserves are limited, Dissanayake indicated a preference for legal measures to safeguard against future price hikes and exploitative practices.
Plans for the next Maha season are already underway, with the government committed to purchasing adequate paddy to meet demand. The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) and the Food Commissioner’s Department have been instructed to refurbish storage facilities. By empowering small-scale rice millers, the government aims to produce sufficient rice for consumers, with distribution primarily through the cooperative stores chain.
This approach not only stabilizes the rice market but also ensures affordability for all Sri Lankans. As government initiatives progress, this critical update on the rice industry promises to impact the daily lives of citizens across the nation.
