The Russian Embassy announced that Sri Lanka’s bid to join BRICS will be reviewed in upcoming consultations, along with applications from other countries under Russia’s leadership. Sri Lanka formally submitted its request to join BRICS during the recent summit in Russia. Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath appealed to member states for their support, emphasizing Sri Lanka’s desire to contribute to the alliance. Representing Sri Lanka, Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane participated in the event held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024.

The summit, BRICS’s first since its expansion on January 1, 2024, included over 30 delegations, 22 heads of state, and representatives from international organizations, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The Kazan meeting served as a significant diplomatic success for Russia, showcasing the nation’s engagement with the international community despite geopolitical challenges. President Vladimir Putin utilized the platform to highlight Russia’s global partnerships.

BRICS’s focus at the summit was on strengthening ties with the Global South and fostering a multipolar world order that could reshape the global financial and trade landscape. This mission aligns with Sri Lanka’s strategic interest in joining BRICS, as the country seeks to enhance its influence and contribute to a diversified global system.
