No Hidden Treasure Found at Excavation Site

News Today: Discover why no hidden treasure was unearthed at the Central Expressway site in Wewagedara

Excavations conducted near the Wandurawa Rajamaha Viharaya in Wewagedara, rumored to reveal hidden treasures, concluded on November 23 without yielding any valuable findings. The site, situated on paddy land designated for Central Expressway construction, revealed only 20 metal rock blocks, which were broken into smaller pieces but contained no hidden artifacts.

The three-day excavation, ordered by the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court, aimed to address concerns over potential damage to the construction site caused by alleged treasure hunts. Despite the use of specialized equipment by the Police Special Task Force (STF), no significant discoveries were made.

Officials from the Department of Archaeology, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Government Analyst’s Department, and Road Development Authority supervised the excavation, ensuring public transparency as per court orders. A final report detailing the findings will be submitted to the Magistrate’s Court on November 26.

Archaeology Director General Prof. Thusitha Mendis dismissed the treasure rumors as myths stemming from ‘Nidan Wadula,’ historical documents often misinterpreted since the 18th century. He urged the public to prioritize preserving archaeological sites instead of pursuing mythical treasures, emphasizing the importance of protecting cultural heritage for future generations.

The excavation highlighted the need for awareness about the archaeological significance of such sites and discouraged illegal activities fueled by unfounded beliefs.
