News Today: Foreign policy must reflect Sri Lanka’s national, human, and global interests, says Prime Minister
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that Sri Lanka’s foreign policy must balance national interests while reflecting broader human and global concerns. Speaking at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) convocation, she underlined the urgent need for economic stability and recovery as a top national priority.
Dr. Amarasuriya noted that Sri Lanka’s foreign relations are heavily shaped by its geography, population, economic resources, and diplomatic efficiency. She highlighted the country’s efforts to recover from its ongoing economic and debt crisis while preserving its reputation for principled diplomacy. “Sri Lanka has always taken a stand for peace, sovereignty, and international justice, earning a respected global reputation,” she remarked.
The Prime Minister called for leveraging these diplomatic assets to address emerging challenges. She praised the country’s past wise actions, which have contributed to significant international recognition.
The event, which recognized 242 students with various diplomas and certificates, also featured former Maldivian Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla as the Guest of Honour. BCIS Chairperson and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was present, along with other distinguished guests, including members of the diplomatic corps.
Dr. Amarasuriya’s speech emphasized that a forward-looking foreign policy grounded in national and human interests is essential for Sri Lanka’s progress on the global stage.
