News Today: Clean Sri Lanka Programme Starts January 1, 2025
The Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry has announced that the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme will officially commence on January 1, 2025. This initiative will focus on 341 Local Government bodies and aims to foster a social, environmental, and ethical awakening across the country.
The programme is designed to strengthen environmental, economic, and social sustainability while enhancing the efficiency of state mechanisms. It aligns with the President’s policy statement to elevate society through sustainable practices and ethical values.
A Gazette notification recently established an 18-member Presidential Task Force to oversee the planning, implementation, and progress review of this ambitious programme. The Task Force is mandated to ensure the objectives are met within a specified timeframe.
The members of the Presidential Task Force include the Army, Navy, and Air Force Commanders, Acting Inspector General Priyantha Weerasuriya, Urban Development Authority Chairman Kumudu Lal De Silva, and notable experts such as Dr. Gamini Batuwitage, Dr. Anuruddha Gamage, Sandya Salgado, and others.
This programme marks a key milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. Regular progress reports will be submitted to the President, ensuring accountability and efficiency in achieving its goals.
