News Today: Sri Lanka Government Announces Guaranteed Paddy Prices for Farmers
The Sri Lankan government has announced a significant initiative to support paddy farmers by guaranteeing purchase prices through the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB). Agriculture Lands, Livestock, and Irrigation Minister K. D. Lalkantha made the announcement yesterday, outlining the new pricing structure for different paddy varieties. This move aims to stabilize the market, encourage local production, and ensure farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work. News Today brings you the latest on this developing story.
The government will pay Rs. 120 per kilogramme for Nadu paddy, Rs. 125 per kilogramme for Samba paddy, and Rs. 132 per kilogramme for Keeri Samba paddy. A substantial allocation of Rs. 5 billion from the treasury has been earmarked for this purpose, with funds being channeled through the Ministry of Agriculture to the PMB as needed. The Minister explained that further funds will be generated through rice sales, ensuring a sustainable financial model for the initiative.
A key focus of the government’s plan is to ensure timely payments to farmers. Minister Lalkantha acknowledged past delays and assured that this time, payments would be made promptly after purchase. To enhance transparency and safeguard public funds, the purchasing process will involve a development officer, a representative from the farmers’ organization, and the purchasing manager. This collaborative approach aims to build trust and ensure accountability in every transaction.
The PMB has prepared ample storage capacity to accommodate the anticipated harvest. Minister Lalkantha emphasized that the Board is authorized to purchase only standardized rice that meets the required quality standards. This measure protects consumers and ensures the market receives high-quality rice. He encouraged farmers not to sell their harvest below the certified prices, assuring them of the government’s commitment to fair pricing.
This initiative is expected to significantly benefit Sri Lankan farmers, providing them with a stable income and encouraging increased paddy cultivation. The government’s commitment to transparent processes and timely payments is a crucial step towards building a sustainable and thriving agricultural sector.
