The Badulla District Disaster Management Unit has issued an urgent warning to motorists and pedestrians following the devastating bush fire in Ella. While the fire has been brought under control, large boulders have developed cracks and may pose a serious risk to commuters on the Ella-Wellawaya highway.

Devastating Impact of the Bush Fire

The bush fire, which broke out on Thursday, February 13th, in the Rock Hill area of the Rawana Ella forest reserve, spread rapidly due to strong winds and dry weather conditions. Over 600 acres of pristine forest were affected over the course of three days, leading to significant environmental destruction.

Authorities Take Action

A large-scale operation involving the police, security forces, Ella Pradeshiya Sabha, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Departments, and Bandarawela Urban Council Fire Brigade was launched to contain the flames. Their relentless efforts ensured that the fire was brought under control, preventing further devastation.

Environmental experts fear that rare species of animals and plants have been severely impacted by the destruction of a vast portion of the Rawana Ella forest reserve. The long-term effects of this disaster remain uncertain, prompting urgent calls for conservation measures.

Safety Warning & Investigation

Badulla District Secretary Panduka Sri Prabhath Abeywardene emphasized that the fire’s spread was controlled using fire gaps. However, the exact cause is still under investigation, with authorities suspecting that it may have been human-induced.

Meanwhile, Badulla Division DIG Sujith Wedamulla confirmed that a special police team has been deployed to investigate and apprehend any individuals responsible for starting the fire.

The fire’s intense heat has caused huge boulders to crack, creating a serious hazard for travelers on the Ella-Wellawaya main highway. Authorities strongly advise motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution when traveling through the affected area.
