News Today: Government Confirms All Pending Passports Issuance in One Month
Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala has announced that all pending passports scheduled for issuance will be delivered within one month. The government is actively working to normalize the process, ensuring faster and more efficient passport services.
During the first meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs of the Tenth Parliament, held on the 22nd at the Parliament under his Chairmanship, the Minister reassured the public of ongoing improvements in passport issuance. The Parliamentary Communications Department released an official statement regarding these developments.
Faster Passport Services and Expansions
A key highlight of the Minister’s address was the introduction of a 24-hour passport issuance service, aimed at enhancing public confidence. He also commended the Department of Immigration & Emigration staff for their commitment to processing applications efficiently.
Additionally, a new passport issuance office in Jaffna is in the pipeline, pending the procurement of essential printing equipment. The Minister confirmed that the number of passports issued at local council offices would also be doubled, making the service more accessible nationwide.
Security Concerns for Opposition MPs
The Committee also addressed security provisions for Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs). The Chair noted that investigations into threats faced by MPs are ongoing, with final assessment reports in progress. Based on these evaluations, necessary security measures will be taken if required.
Crackdown on Underworld Activities
A significant portion of the discussion revolved around underworld activities in Sri Lanka, with a primary focus on the drug trade. The Acting Inspector General of Police informed the Committee that diplomatic efforts are underway to identify and apprehend overseas individuals orchestrating these illegal activities and bring them back to the country.
Police Salaries and NGO Regulations
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa raised concerns over a potential reduction in police officers’ salaries under the proposed budget. However, Minister Wijepala reassured that, despite projected budget cuts, no officer’s salary would be reduced. Instead, salary increments would be ensured.
The meeting also stressed the importance of regulating projects funded by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), ensuring transparency and proper oversight.
