Game-Changing NPP Budget 2025: Economic & Social Reforms Ahead!

News Today: NPP budget reshapes Sri Lanka’s economy and society with reforms in education, salaries, and social welfare

Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, emphasized in Parliament that the 2025 NPP budget presented by the National People’s Power (NPP) Government will significantly impact Sri Lanka’s economy and society.

Addressing the final day of the second reading of the budget debate on the Appropriation Bill, the Prime Minister stated that the NPP Government has undertaken the responsibility of rebuilding a bankrupt nation by implementing crucial economic and social reforms. The budget reflects the Government’s commitment to structural transformation, focusing on education, public sector wages, and social welfare.

One of the key highlights is the salary increase for public school education staff. With this revision, principals now rank seventh and teachers eighth among the top 10 highest-paid government employees. The basic salary of principals has increased by Rs. 30,105, while teachers have received an increment of Rs. 25,360. The lowest-grade salary has been raised by Rs. 15,750, fulfilling a promise made in the NPP policy statement.

To boost local pharmaceutical production, the Government has removed VAT on raw materials required for manufacturing medicines. Additionally, contrary to opposition claims, there is no VAT on imported medicines.

The budget has also prioritized education, increasing capital investment by Rs. 6,019 billion. A separate allocation has been made for children with special needs, ensuring inclusivity in education. Furthermore, Rs. 300 million has been allocated for ‘The Sri Lankan Day,’ a national initiative to promote unity among all communities.

Dr. Amarasuriya described the 2025 budget as a foundation for Economic Democracy, integrating justice, equality, and market regulation. It also focuses on strengthening social security and ensuring real democracy through public participation.

The Government has also launched the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project to promote justice and equality, encouraging citizens to actively participate in societal transformation. The Prime Minister reiterated that the NPP Government remains committed to eliminating corruption and establishing a fair and progressive society.
