Sajith Premadasa Blasts Government Over Law Violations

News Today: Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa warns of dangers as Sri Lanka’s government disregards Supreme Court rulings.

Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader MP Sajith Premadasa strongly criticized the Sri Lankan government for its failure to uphold the rule of law and its increasing disregard for Supreme Court rulings. He warned that such lawlessness is not just incompetence but a serious threat to the nation’s stability.

Premadasa highlighted several Supreme Court decisions that exposed government mismanagement, including:

  • The illegal appointment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP)
  • The controversial selection of VFS for Sri Lanka’s new visa system
  • The postponement of the 2023 Local Government Elections, violating fundamental voter rights

“The government’s actions dismantle the very foundations that ensure our security and stability. If we do not act now, our economy, national security, and democracy will suffer irreparable damage,” Premadasa stated.

Supreme Court Rulings Expose Government Failures

Premadasa’s remarks follow the Sri Lankan Supreme Court’s latest verdict, which ruled that the postponement of local elections violated voter rights. The court ordered the National Election Commission to take immediate action to hold the delayed Local Government Elections.

Additionally, the Supreme Court previously:

  • Blocked the Cabinet’s decision to outsource the visa application process to GBS Technology Services & IVS Global- FZCO, VFS VF Worldwide Holdings LTD consortium in August.
  • Issued an injunction in July, preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from acting as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

These repeated court rulings highlight the government’s failure to follow due process, raising serious concerns about governance and transparency in Sri Lanka.

Calls for Accountability & Legal Reforms

With growing public outrage, the opposition has demanded immediate corrective action to prevent further erosion of democratic rights. Many political analysts believe that continued legal violations could damage Sri Lanka’s international reputation, economic stability, and public trust in institutions.

As the pressure mounts, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the Supreme Court’s rulings and the public demand for justice.
