News Today: Over 2,267 vehicles with fake number plates identified in Colombo through police surveillance
Police have identified 2,267 vehicles operating with fake number plates through a special operation using security cameras installed across Colombo City. This initiative, launched in February last year, aims to crack down on traffic violators and illegal vehicle use.
From February to December 31, a total of 12,246 traffic violations were recorded through security cameras. Among them, 2,267 vehicles were flagged as illegal after tracing their registered owners. A significant portion of these vehicles had number plates that were not registered in the Motor Traffic Department’s database. Some registered owners, when traced, were found to lack the financial capacity to own such vehicles, further confirming illegal activity.
Senior Superintendent of Police Chandana Kodituwakku, Director of the Close-up Surveillance Division, stated that all 2,267 vehicles are believed to be illegal. He assured that future steps would include identifying their owners and taking legal action. The authorities plan to forward cases to police stations island-wide for necessary legal proceedings.
The discovery of fake number plates raises serious concerns regarding illegal vehicle use and crime prevention. With continued surveillance and advanced security measures, law enforcement is committed to ensuring road safety and legal compliance across Sri Lanka.
