Rice Importation Plan by Food Policy Committee

Food Policy Committee Recommends Rice Imports to Ensure Supply

News Today: Rice Importation Plan by Food Policy Committee

The Food Policy and Security Committee has recommended the future importation of rice to ensure an adequate supply for consumers and prevent any potential shortages. This recommendation comes in the wake of rising rice prices and the ongoing market shortage of certain rice varieties, even during the harvesting season. These challenges were highlighted during the fifth meeting of the committee, which convened on April 1st at the Presidential Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha, alongside Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe.

A key factor contributing to the shortage was the significant crop damage caused by heavy rains earlier this year. These rains led to a substantial reduction in expected harvests on two separate occasions, which worsened the supply shortage. The committee further noted that the irregular use of rice for animal feed has exacerbated the problem. In response, the committee has proposed importing broken rice specifically for use in animal feed, along with exploring alternative feed sources to ensure a balance in market supply.

Additionally, the committee authorized the formation of a subcommittee to oversee the importation of the necessary quantity of broken rice. This subcommittee will be led by the Director General of Agriculture, ensuring that all importation procedures are properly followed. Key members of the committee, including Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, President’s Senior Additional Secretary Kapila Janaka Bandara, and other high-ranking officials, attended the meeting to discuss potential solutions.

With rice being a staple food for many, these steps are crucial in maintaining a steady supply and stabilizing prices in the market. As discussions on rice imports continue, the Food Policy and Security Committee will closely monitor the situation to ensure food security for consumers.
