News Today: IGP action against underworld gangs, drugs trafficking & corruption in Sri Lanka intensifies with new legal reforms
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has pledged to launch a major crackdown on underworld gangs, drug trafficking, and related criminal networks in Sri Lanka. Speaking to the media after officially assuming duties yesterday, the IGP made it clear that no individual — regardless of political influence, position in law enforcement, or military background — will be spared if involved in illegal activities.
He revealed that politicians have been accused of supporting criminal gangs and drug networks, warning that they too will face severe legal consequences. The IGP stressed that the current legal framework is inadequate to sustain long-term raids and enforcement, prompting the formulation of new laws to address organized crime, corruption, and increased shooting incidents.
“We are working towards minimizing crime, drug trafficking, corruption, and shootings in the country,” IGP Weerasooriya said. “Strict legal action will be taken against anyone involved in these activities, including those within the Police Department, Tri-Forces, and political circles.”
The IGP also noted that certain criminals have fled abroad, continuing to operate through associates in Sri Lanka. These individuals include Armed Forces deserters and former police officers linked to drug operations. Measures are being taken to dismantle these networks, beginning with cleansing the Police Department itself before expanding operations to the wider society.
He expressed concern about the large number of illegal firearms in circulation, many originating from the Tri-Forces, the LTTE, and stolen police weapons. Investigations are underway to track and recover these weapons.
The IGP emphasized that strict disciplinary action will be taken against any police officer found complicit in criminal or drug-related activities. If found guilty, such officers will be suspended and prosecuted.
International support, he added, has been strong, with global partners offering assistance to curb crime and corruption in Sri Lanka. Efforts are now focused on strengthening these ties to create a safer and more lawful environment for the public.
