News Today: Sri Lanka IGP to combat crime and impose law and order with full government backing and zero political interference.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya announced that the Government has extended its full support to law enforcement, empowering the Police to combat crimes and organised gangs without any political interference.
Speaking to the media after receiving blessings from the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters, the IGP emphasised that the only directive from the Government is to enforce the law. He stated, “If the Police are unable to enforce the law properly under the present political climate, it would amount to a weakness of the Police, not of the system.”
He reassured the public that his instructions are solely to implement justice. No officer will be directed to conceal crimes or avoid investigations. Those who neglect their duties will face strict disciplinary and legal measures.
To improve accountability, the IGP revealed that after he introduced a WhatsApp number for citizens to lodge complaints, over 2,000 submissions were received within a single day. This influx reflects long-standing grievances that had previously gone unanswered. He acknowledged that not all issues can be solved overnight but assured that a systematic mechanism is being developed to respond swiftly. Senior DIGs down to lower ranks have been instructed to take responsibility and ensure prompt action.
Addressing structural challenges, the IGP noted that Police promotions had stalled since 2020. However, a fair framework has now been agreed with the National Police Commission. Promotions will resume based on seniority, skills, and examinations.
He also highlighted a shortage of about 30,000 officers due to halted recruitments in recent years. To bridge the gap, 5,000 new officers will be recruited in 2025, with approval for another 10,000. Nearly 1,100 newly trained officers will be deployed within the next few weeks.
Before meeting religious leaders, the IGP paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, where Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela welcomed him with a basket of jasmine flowers.
The IGP’s reforms mark a strong step toward restoring law, order, and public trust in Sri Lanka.
