News Today: Debunking the false news about Prime Minister visiting prison hospital
The Prime Minister’s Office has firmly denied and condemned recent media reports that falsely claimed Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, along with her spouse Prof. Maithree Wickramasinghe, had visited former President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the prison hospital during the night.
In an official statement issued yesterday, Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputanthri stressed that these allegations are entirely fabricated and have no basis in fact. He further confirmed that a formal letter has already been sent to the television channel responsible for broadcasting the misleading report. The letter, addressed directly to the owner of the channel, demands an immediate correction and retraction to prevent further spread of misinformation.
The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted that the dissemination of false and unethical news not only misguides the public but also undermines professional journalism standards in the country. It called upon all media institutions to act responsibly and ensure accuracy before publishing or broadcasting sensitive political content.
Additionally, the Office stated that legal action will be pursued against those responsible for spreading the false news story on both television and social media platforms, including Facebook pages linked to the channel.
This incident once again raises concerns about the growing spread of misinformation in Sri Lanka and the role of media institutions in maintaining credibility. The Prime Minister’s Office reiterated its commitment to transparency and truth, assuring the public that any future updates will be communicated officially through reliable channels.
By taking strong action, the Prime Minister’s Office aims to set a precedent that unethical reporting and deliberate attempts to mislead citizens will not be tolerated.
