Opposition Leader Demands Strong US Tariff Concessions Now

News Today: Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader calls for stronger US tariff concessions to stabilize economy and boost trade opportunities.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for stronger US tariff concessions for Sri Lanka, highlighting the critical need to support the country’s fragile economy and ensure long-term stability. He made this request during a meeting with a visiting delegation from the US House for Democracy Partnership led by Derek Luyyen, who met with him in Colombo on Wednesday.

Premadasa emphasized that while Sri Lanka has been receiving some assistance, greater tariff relief is necessary to enhance the competitiveness of Sri Lankan exports in the US market. He noted that providing increased access and reduced barriers would not only help strengthen trade relations but also encourage investment, job creation, and sustainable development in Sri Lanka.

The discussions between the Opposition Leader and the US delegation extended beyond trade and tariffs, touching on education, commercial partnerships, and people-to-people ties. According to a statement released by Premadasa’s office, the dialogue reflected the need for a holistic approach to bilateral relations, with economic cooperation playing a central role in recovery efforts.

Premadasa stressed that Sri Lanka’s recovery journey requires global partners to extend fair opportunities. “If tariff concessions are broadened, it will provide breathing space for industries and create stability for small and medium enterprises that are struggling under the current economic climate,” he added.

The US delegation assured that they are committed to strengthening ties with Sri Lanka and acknowledged the importance of inclusive economic development. Their visit is part of broader efforts to enhance cooperation in trade, democracy, and education between the two nations.

This development highlights the growing importance of Sri Lanka’s trade negotiations with the US and the role of tariff policies in shaping the country’s future economic stability.
