IGP’s WhatsApp Hotline Empowers Public with 7,000 Complaints

News Today: IGP receives complaints via WhatsApp Sri Lanka 2025 for crime control

The Police Headquarters announced that more than 7,000 complaints have been received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) through the dedicated WhatsApp number 071-8598888, set up to enable the public to submit complaints directly.

IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya confirmed that each complaint is being investigated with immediate attention, ensuring timely responses to public concerns. The initiative has created a direct communication channel between citizens and the Police, strengthening trust and improving transparency.

According to the IGP, the complaints include not only general grievances but also sensitive information about organized criminals, drug traffickers, and possible links between certain Police officers and criminal networks. He emphasized that such intelligence is being taken seriously, and investigations are already underway.

The IGP assured the public that strict measures are in place to safeguard the identity and confidentiality of individuals who provide information through the hotline. Protecting whistleblowers and informants is seen as a critical part of encouraging citizens to come forward without fear of retaliation.

He further revealed that the WhatsApp number has already proven effective, with credible information leading to several successful raids targeting criminal activity across the country. This has reinforced the importance of the platform as a reliable tool for enhancing law enforcement operations.

By combining technology with law enforcement, the Police aim to create a more accountable and community-driven approach to tackling crime. Citizens are encouraged to continue sharing information, as the system not only helps resolve individual complaints but also contributes to fighting organized crime and ensuring public safety.

This initiative highlights the Police Department’s effort to modernize its complaint-handling mechanisms and build stronger cooperation between law enforcement and the people.
