Severe Cyclonic Storm Threatens Bay of Bengal – Urgent Alert

News Today: Updates on the cyclonic storm expected to intensify over Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka

The Meteorology Department has issued a warning that a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is likely to develop into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28.

Currently, the system is positioned approximately 720 km northeast of Trincomalee, moving west-northwest at nearly 10 km/h. Over the next 24 hours, it is expected to intensify further over the Southwest and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal, before potentially making landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast as a severe cyclonic storm.

Due to this developing weather system, fishing and naval communities have been strongly advised to avoid deep sea areas between 5°N–15°N and 80°E–95°E. Coastal waters from Kankasanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee are considered dangerous, and those operating from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota are urged to exercise extreme caution.

Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas are expected in affected maritime zones. Coastal residents are advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow safety measures issued by authorities. Disaster management teams and rescue units are on high alert, preparing for any emergency.

This weather system poses a potential threat not only to Sri Lanka but also to parts of India’s East Coast, particularly Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, if the storm continues to strengthen. Authorities emphasize the importance of preparedness as sea conditions worsen and wind intensity increases over the coming days.
