22 Candidates Contesting in Presidential Election
News Today: Presidential Election Update 22 Candidates Confirmed
A total of 22 candidates are now contesting the upcoming Presidential election after four more candidates placed their cash deposits yesterday. According to the Election Commission, the new candidates are Pani Wijesiriwardena from the Socialist Equality Party, Anthony Victor Perera, Muhammad Ilyas, and Pemasiri Manage as independent candidates.
The other candidates include President Ranil Wickremesinghe, former MP Sarath Keerthirathne, K.K. Piyadasa, former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Oshala Herath from the ‘Abhinawa Niwahal Peramuna’, A.S.P. Liyanage of the Sri Lanka Labour Party, Sajith Premadasa of the ‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya’, P.W.S.K. Bandaranayake from the ‘Jathika Sanwardhana Peramuna’, Ajantha De Zoysa from the Ruhunu Janatha Party, Siritunga Jayasuriya from the United Socialist Party, K. Ananda Kularatne, Sarath Manamendra from the Nawa Sihala Urumaya, Akmeemana Dayaratna Thera, Battaramulle Seelaratne Thera, Siripala Amarasinghe, Sarath Fonseka (Independent candidate), and K.R. Krishan from the Arunalu Janata Peramuna.
The Election Commission has officially announced that the Presidential election will be held on September 21. This diverse lineup of candidates highlights the varied political landscape of Sri Lanka, offering voters a wide array of choices in the upcoming election.
