News Today: Catholic Church urges justice for 2019 Easter tragedy
The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka has publicly voiced its dissatisfaction regarding the prolonged delay in prosecuting those responsible for the devastating Easter Sunday attacks that occurred on 21st April 2019. This News Today development comes as the country approaches the sixth anniversary of the tragedy, which left 270 dead and over 500 injured.
Fr. Jude Krishantha, Director of Communications for the National Catholic Church, addressed media representatives and emphasized that while the Church does not intend to criticize the government, it is compelled to remind authorities that justice for the victims of the 2019 Easter bombings must remain a national priority.
“We do not intend to criticise the government, but would like to remind that bringing those responsible for the Easter Sunday bomb attacks to justice should be given the same priority as that being given to the prosecution of others,” said Fr. Jude.
The attacks, which targeted churches and hotels, shocked the nation and the world. In the years since, the Church has continued to call for a transparent and fair investigation into the incident, demanding accountability from both state authorities and any other parties involved.
Many families of the victims continue to mourn without closure, and Church leaders argue that the lack of timely justice undermines public trust in national institutions and the rule of law.
The Catholic Church’s renewed demand highlights the urgency of action and echoes a broader public sentiment demanding truth and justice in one of Sri Lanka’s darkest chapters.
