News Today:GSP+ Monitoring Mission applauds Sri Lanka’s reforms
The GSP Plus Monitoring Mission praises Sri Lanka’s policy reforms during a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Held on Monday, the European Union (EU) Delegation expressed appreciation for the country’s new policy directions aligned with GSP+ objectives, reaffirming support for Sri Lanka’s re-application process.
Charles Whiteley, Head of the South Asia Division of the European External Action Service, led the delegation, offering guidance on strengthening bilateral cooperation and encouraging Sri Lanka’s reform agenda.
Discussions focused on inclusive economic development, the IMF programme, and women’s political and economic participation. The Prime Minister highlighted the need for enhanced childcare, eldercare, and public transport systems to empower women and boost economic inclusivity.
Key priorities such as poverty alleviation, digital transformation, the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, and legal reforms including anti-drug and anti-human trafficking legislation were also addressed. The PM also outlined steps taken under the Online Safety Act.
European Union Ambassador Carmen Moreno emphasized the EU’s ongoing commitment to deeper economic, cultural, and tourism ties with Sri Lanka. She praised Sri Lanka’s progressive vision under the GSP+ framework.
Senior Sri Lankan officials including Pradeep Saputhanthri (Secretary to the Prime Minister), Sagarika Bogahawatta (Additional Secretary), and Sugeeshwara Gunaratna (Director General, Europe and North America Division) were in attendance.
This engagement underscores the EU’s recognition of Sri Lanka’s policy strides and growing cooperation through the GSP+ framework—a pivotal mechanism to support sustainable development.
