News Today: Met Department issues heat advisory ‘to caution level’
The Department of Meteorology in Sri Lanka has issued a heat advisory as temperatures soar to what is being termed the “Caution Level” across multiple regions. The advisory affects residents in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Southern, and Eastern provinces, along with Ratnapura and Monaragala districts.
According to a spokesman for the Department, the Heat Index Forecast—which factors in relative humidity and the day’s maximum temperature—shows that the temperature “felt” by the human body will be significantly higher than the recorded air temperature.
“This heat index is the condition your body actually feels,” said the Met Department spokesman. “When high humidity combines with extreme heat, the body struggles to cool itself, leading to heat-related health issues.”
The department has urged the public to take necessary precautions. Prolonged exposure to the sun and outdoor physical activity may cause fatigue, and continued activity under these conditions can result in heat cramps or more serious heat-related illnesses.
Health officials and the Meteorology Department both recommend that individuals:
-
Stay well hydrated throughout the day
-
Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak sun hours
-
Wear light and breathable clothing
-
Seek shade or cool environments whenever possible
Residents in the affected areas are strongly advised to monitor updates and take the warning seriously, especially vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
