News Today: NPP outlines plan for $8.5 billion tourism income by 2025
National Peoples’ Power (NPP) Kalutara District Team Leader, Nalinda Jayatissa, announced plans to boost Sri Lanka’s tourism income to $8.5 billion by 2025. Speaking in Colombo, Jayatissa shared that the NPP intends to increase tourist arrivals to four million annually by implementing a well-structured strategy focused on tourism infrastructure and resource development. The government, as part of its strategy, is prioritizing the enhancement of facilities and services within the tourism sector to support the rising number of visitors.
A significant aspect of this plan involves improvements to the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), which currently lacks the capacity to manage increasing tourist numbers. In collaboration with the Japanese government, steps are underway to commence construction of a second terminal to address this limitation. Jayatissa emphasized that this initiative is crucial to elevate the tourism sector, attract more visitors, and meet the anticipated revenue goals for 2025.
With the right infrastructure in place, the NPP believes that Sri Lanka can enhance the visitor experience, sustain increased arrivals, and achieve its ambitious income target. Tourism is seen as a primary economic driver in the coming years, with a positive impact on local businesses and employment across the island.
