Petition Filed Against IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon’s Appointment Citing Constitutional Violations

A petition challenging the legality of Deshabandu Tennakoon’s role as the Inspector General of Police has been submitted to the Supreme Court, advocating for a prohibition on his continuance in this capacity.

The petition, lodged by the Anti Corruption Movement associated with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), also requests a judicial verdict declaring Deshabandu Tennakoon as unsuitable for public service, including any positions within the Sri Lanka Police Force.

Niroshan Padukka, the movement’s Convener, and Ananda Palitha, a Committee Member, initiated this legal action against IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, the Constitutional Council’s members, the National Police Commission’s members, and the Attorney General, citing them as respondents.

The petitioners argue that Deshabandu Tennakoon’s appointment as IGP by the President on February 27 contradicts the principles of rule of law and breaches constitutional mandates.
