All Schools to Close Before Presidential Elections

News Today: Schools in Sri Lanka to close for Presidential Elections

The Ministry of Education has announced that all schools will be closed on Friday, 20th September, in preparation for the upcoming Presidential elections. Schools will reopen on Monday, 23rd September. This decision follows a formal request made by the Election Commission. Schools that are to serve as polling centres must be handed over to their respective Grama Niladharies after school hours on Thursday, 19th September.

The Ministry has instructed all Zonal Education Directors and principals to ensure the availability of necessary facilities, including tables, chairs, and halls, to accommodate the polling activities.

Additionally, the Ministry confirmed that schools being used as counting centres will remain closed for the duration of the related activities, as outlined in the circular issued to schools.

This closure aims to ensure a smooth process for the Presidential election and guarantees that all logistical needs for polling are met efficiently.
