Sri Lanka Anticipates Lifting of ICC Suspension: Sports Minister
Sports Minister Harin Fernando has confidently expressed that the suspension imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) is poised to be lifted in the coming days. The Minister made these comments briefing media in Wattala, marking a potential end to a challenging phase for Sri Lanka’s beloved sport.
The ICC, in November 2023, had suspended Sri Lankan cricket citing concerns over alleged government interference in its administration. This decision had far-reaching implications, notably the economic strain on Sri Lankan cricket, and the country’s inability to host prestigious events such as the Under-19 World Cup and the annual ICC conference.
Minister Fernando’s statement is also rooted in recent engagements with key ICC figures, including CEO Geoff Allardice, who undertook a visit to Sri Lanka earlier this month. The minister highlighted that these discussions were “fruitful,” hinting at a mutual understanding and satisfactory progress in resolving the issues at hand.
