In a significant move towards enhancing transparency in vehicle transactions, the Sri Lanka Customs Department has launched a new Vehicle Verification Portal, allowing the public to confirm the legality of imported vehicles in the country. This important News Today helps protect buyers from purchasing illegally imported or fraudulently assembled vehicles.

According to Additional Director General of Customs, Seevali Arukgoda, the portal allows users to conveniently check the authenticity of a vehicle by submitting their phone number, NIC or passport number, and vehicle chassis number. Once submitted, an SMS confirmation is sent to the user indicating the legal status of the vehicle.

Arukgoda emphasized that this tool is especially useful for confirming whether a vehicle has been:

  • Legally imported

  • Assembled locally using parts

  • Registered under fraudulent number plates

However, it is important to note that vehicles imported prior to 2005 are not supported on the new system.
