News Today: Thundershowers expected today in multiple regions of Sri Lanka
The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory stating that showers or thundershowers are expected in several parts of the island today, especially during the afternoon and night. This forecast includes a wide range of areas, highlighting the need for public preparedness across Sri Lanka.
According to the Met Department, early morning showers are also likely in the Western Province and in the districts of Galle, Matara, and Puttalam. This means commuters and residents in these areas should be prepared for wet conditions starting from the early hours.
Fairly heavy rainfall, exceeding 75 mm, is anticipated in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva Provinces. These intense showers could lead to localized flooding and other temporary disruptions.
The public is strongly advised to take safety precautions during thundershowers, particularly due to the risk of lightning strikes and strong, localized winds. The Department urges residents to stay indoors during heavy rain and avoid open areas to minimize potential harm.
In addition to rain, misty conditions are expected in the morning hours in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa District. Reduced visibility may affect road travel during these hours, and motorists are advised to drive cautiously.
