News Today: Powerful Tribute at 16th National War Heroes Commemoration Today

The 16th National War Heroes’ Commemoration Ceremony is set to take place today, marking a deeply significant moment in Sri Lanka’s modern history. Held at the National War Hero Cenotaph in Sri Jayawardhanapura, this commemorative event will be conducted under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM and will see the participation of the nation’s top military leaders and dignitaries.

Prominent among the attendees are the Tri-Forces Commanders during the final stages of the war against the LTTE: Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, and Marshal of the Air Roshan Gunathilaka. Their presence serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the leadership that steered the nation through a defining period.

In conjunction with today’s commemoration, public social service programmes will be implemented across the country. These initiatives are being coordinated by members of the Tri-Forces, the Police Department, and the Civil Defence Department, as a tribute to the spirit of service shown by the fallen heroes.

Deputy Defence Minister Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.), along with high-ranking military officers and family members of war heroes, will also be in attendance to lay floral tributes and pay solemn respects to the courageous soldiers who gave their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.

As we reflect on this solemn day, let us remember the bravery, loyalty, and selfless dedication of Sri Lanka’s war heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s sovereignty.
