News Today: Nationwide 46 shootings confirmed by Police in 2025

Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga has confirmed that a total of 46 shootings have occurred across Sri Lanka from January 1, 2025. Speaking at a press conference, he revealed that 31 out of these 46 shootings were linked to organised criminal gangs, highlighting the growing threat of gang violence in the country.

According to the Police Spokesman, over 100 suspects have already been arrested in connection with these gang-related incidents. Furthermore, the Police have seized a total of 41 firearms, including 27 pistols and 14 T-56 assault rifles, directly tied to these shootings.

One of the most disturbing incidents occurred in Mount Lavinia on May 5, where a 19-year-old youth was chased and fatally shot. Following a prompt investigation by the Mount Lavinia Division Criminal Investigation Bureau, the shooter, motorcyclist, and two other suspects were arrested. The firearm and motorcycle used in the attack were also recovered.

More shockingly, SSP Manatunga disclosed that the shooter in the Mount Lavinia case had previously been arrested for a shooting in Dehiwala on May 20, 2024. Despite his criminal background, he was granted bail in April 2025, and just weeks later, he committed another deadly shooting.

“After arresting him for the Dehiwala shooting, we produced him in court on November 19, 2024. Although he was released on bail, he reoffended shortly after,” Manatunga stated.

Authorities have now rearrested the suspect and vowed to take necessary legal action to prevent further repeat offenses.
