News Today: 67 Individuals Arrested in Sri Lanka Over Bribery and Corruption Cases
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has reported a significant crackdown on bribery and corruption in Sri Lanka, arresting 67 individuals in the past nine months. According to CIABOC, over this period, the Commission received a total of 3,045 complaints, with 259 related specifically to bribery, 466 concerning corruption, and 86 regarding illegal asset acquisition.
CIABOC’s investigations revealed multiple instances of unethical practices across sectors, prompting swift legal action. Out of the total complaints, 810 were dismissed due to insufficient evidence or lack of alignment with the Bribery Act. Meanwhile, 124 files have been submitted for prosecution, and 30 additional cases are currently under registration.
The Commission emphasized its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability within public and private sectors, working actively to process and investigate every complaint thoroughly. CIABOC is taking significant steps to reduce corruption nationwide by acting decisively on allegations and enforcing strict legal measures where applicable. This ongoing effort signals a strong stance on ethical governance and underscores the Commission’s dedication to combating corruption at all levels.
