Abandoned Vehicles to Serve Essential Services
News Today: Abandoned Vehicles Not Auctioned, to Serve Essential Services
Abandoned vehicles parked at three locations will not be auctioned, said President’s private secretary, Ananda Wijepala. Instead, the 107 vehicles will be distributed to essential services, including hospitals, law enforcement, and the Education Ministry. Wijepala confirmed that 59 vehicles, which were previously transferred to the Presidential Secretariat from state institutions, will now be returned.
Prominent figures like Akila Viraj, Ruwan Wijewardene, Ashu Marasinghe, Rosy Senanayake, Saman Ratnapriya, and Ranjith Keerthi Tennakoon have already returned their vehicles.
Furthermore, Wijepala highlighted that out of the 833 vehicles in the Presidential Secretariat’s fleet, 29 vehicles, including motorbikes, are missing. The government plans to address this with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to initiate legal action.
The secretary also revealed that there had been misuse of state resources, as 16 vehicles were purchased despite a ban on vehicle imports and handed to individuals who were not entitled to receive them.
