News Today: Investigative Insights on CID Probes Channel 4 Documentary on Easter Bombings

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into a documentary aired by Britain’s Channel 4 TV regarding Sri Lanka’s 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks. The documentary, titled Sri Lanka’s Easter Bombings, was broadcast on September 6, 2023, and includes statements from Azad Hansir Maulana, a former Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) official.

Maulana, who held roles as a media presenter and finance secretary within the TMVP led by former State Minister Sivaneshthurai Chandrakanthan, known as Pillaiyan, provided a statement featured in the documentary. The documentary has sparked controversy for its allegations surrounding the bombings, prompting an external organization to file a complaint with the Ministry of Public Security. This complaint was forwarded to Police Headquarters and eventually assigned to the CID for further investigation.

The CID’s investigation will examine potential violations of the Penal Code, focusing on the dissemination of controversial information and alleged conspiracies linked to the bombings. The matter was brought before the Fort Magistrate’s Court on November 11, 2023, with the CID investigating any offenses under legal guidelines. The developments in this case reflect broader public interest in accountability and truth regarding the tragic events of 2019.
