CID Investigates Viral Video Threat by Former Army Major
News Today: CID probing threats made by a former Army Major
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently investigating threats allegedly made by a former Major of the Sri Lanka Army against members and supporters of other political parties during a National People’s Power (NPP) rally. This complaint, filed by a Member of Parliament on September 7th, has prompted the CID to begin an official inquiry. The incident gained widespread attention after a video of the alleged statement went viral on social media.
In response, the court has instructed the Government Analyst’s Department to verify the authenticity of the video. The suspect, a 47-year-old resident of Kiribathgoda, has been identified as a former Army Major. The NPP denies any involvement with the video and has accused rival political parties of manipulation. The CID’s Computer Crimes Investigation Unit is conducting further investigations into the matter. Several organizations have also lodged formal complaints, pushing for a thorough investigation into the issue.
