News Today: Numerous New Projects Planned Under “Clean Sri Lanka 2025”
A series of transformative new projects for the 2025 financial year have been launched under the “Clean Sri Lanka 2025” programme, a flagship initiative by the Sri Lankan government promoting the vision “A Thriving Nation, A Beautiful Life.” The programme focuses on sustainable development, cultural inclusivity, tourism enhancement, and accessibility.
A progress review meeting for these upcoming projects was held yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat, chaired by Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the President. The review featured updates from multiple ministries, departments, and public institutions involved in the initiative.
One of the standout projects involves the introduction of 10 specially designed buses for people with special needs. Operated by the Sri Lanka Transport Board, these buses will run from Panadura, Kadawatha, and Avissawella to the National Hospital in Colombo, marking the first service of its kind in the country.
Another innovative project includes the development of a “virtual city” centred around Kandy, incorporating the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic area. With an estimated budget of Rs. 50 million, this pilot project is expected to be completed within a year and aims to integrate digital infrastructure with heritage conservation.
To celebrate Sri Lanka’s multicultural identity and promote tourism, a three-day cultural festival is being organized in Colombo across 16 locations, including Galle Face Green. The event will highlight the unique traditions of all ethnic communities in Sri Lanka.
Additionally, the government plans to construct 500 modern public toilets in tourist hotspots, with a total allocation of Rs. 525 million, aimed at improving sanitation and visitor experience.
A key environmental goal is to obtain Blue Flag certification—an international eco-label—for Unawatuna and Hirikatuwa beaches. Over 450 beach custodians are being appointed, with 250 already on board, to support this initiative within the next two years.
