Colombo Court Restricts SJB’s Planned Protest in Maligawatta

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued a directive aimed at the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party, led by Sajith Premadasa and other party members, restricting party members from staging protests that could inconvenience the public and cause traffic, particularly in the Maligawatta area today.

The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Maligawatta Police raised concerns about an impending protest march, stating that the march, was organized by a group linked to a political party, scheduled to take place near the Muslim cemetery in Maligawatta. In light of potential disruptions to pedestrians, the OIC sought a court order to preemptively halt the protest.

The magistrate instructed SJB leader Sajith Premadasa, General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Colombo Central Chief Organizer Mujibur Rahman, Apsara Amarasinghe, and members of the Samagi Jana Balawega, including the party’s women’s organizations, to avoid causing traffic obstructions. The specified areas to remain clear of disruption, include the route extending from the Maligawatta Muslim Cemetery to Sangaraja Mawatha via Pradeepa Mawatha, Saddharma Mawatha, Jayantha Weerasekara Mawatha, Milton Perera Mawatha, and the Jumma Masjid Junction near the Sangaraja roundabout.
